Puedo recordar el momento en que vi a Mandela salir de la cárcel tras 27 años encarcelado. Estaba en casa de mi tío, rodeado de familia y estaba cautivado por un momento monumental en la historia que en su momento no podía ni entender. Tuve el privilegio de ver la historia y la transformación del país en el que crecí. Estaba viendo como cambiaba mi mundo y no tenía ni idea de lo que me deparaba el futuro. Era 1990 y tenía 12 años – ¡todo lo que sabía es que iba a ser jodidamente épico!
De golpe, ¡todas las señales de “Sólo blancos” en las playas que había visto desde niño empezaron a desaparecer! Esas odiosas señales de “Swartes Alleen” empezaron a ser quitadas. Las mejores casas de las playas o del país en general no iba a los blancos de Sudáfrica. ¡Soplaban vientos de cambio!
Cuando volví al colegio fue muy diferente. Empecé 7º (o Standard en Sudáfrica) y de golpe quedé expuesto a, grito, chicos negros. Era tal novedad y tan diferente e interesante. Nunca antes había visto a niños negros en uniforme, imagínate verlos en reputadas escuelas. Crecí con amigos negros de mi edad en la granja de Thornville, Kwazulu-Natal, pero veníamos de antecedentes tan diferentes. ¡Esta era una nueva bestia y me encantaba! Ahí estaba mi estirado colegio gubernamental inglés en Pietermaritzburg aceptando chicos de todas las razas. Negros, indios, chinos… ¡A todo el mundo! Raro de cojones…
Solo un año detrás de mi había un chaval que me encantaba. Era negro y estaba cabreado y le importaban una mierda las reglas. Desafiaba todo y rechazaba quedarse dentro de las líneas. Me encantaba. Se llamaba Anton Luthuli. Creo que era el nieto de Albert Luthuli. Echadle un ojo a esa mierda. Todo lo que sé es que me encantaba era su aspecto anarquista. Era la hostia. Estoy seguro de que lo sigue siendo.
Sea como fuere, esa era una pequeña historia. Siento divagar. Esto es lo que quería decir…
Nelson Mandela cambió mi vida y cambió el país que llamo casa. Era un hombre maravilloso que logró más de lo que yo pueda esperar nunca. Nosotros, como sudafricanos, nunca podremos empezar a explicar lo mucho que quisimos a este hombre. Era nuestro padre. Nuestro abuelo. Nuestro jodido “Madiba”. Él era la razón por la que cualquiera de nosotros teníamos esperanza en creer que podíamos romper barreras y convertirnos en más de lo que la vida nos había restringido, basado en la situación socio-política. Nos hizo creer a todos que podíamos ser cualquier cosa que creyéramos en nuestros corazones. Era el símbolo de fortaleza y unidad y fue el mejor sudafricano que haya vivido nunca, joder. Espero poder llegar a ser una décima parte de lo que fue. Dios, me conformaría con ser una centésima parte.
Descansa en paz, Madiba. Gracias por la manera en que cambiaste mi vida. Gracias por las lecciones que aprendí de ti. Gracias. Gracias. Hay un hueco en este mundo que nunca será rellenado.

I can remember the moment I watched Nelson Mandela walk out of prison after his 27 years of incarceration. I was sitting in my uncle’s house, surrounded by family, and I was transfixed by a monumental moment in history that I couldn’t even fathom at the time. I was privileged to be witnessing history and the transformation of the country I had grown up in. I was watching my world change and I had no idea what was in store for me. It was 1990 and I was 12 years old – all I knew was that this was going to be fucking epic!
Suddenly, all the «Whites Only» signs on the beaches I’d been to as a kid started disappearing! Those obnoxious «Swartes Alleen» signs started getting pulled down. No longer were the whites of South Africa being handed the prime real estate of the beaches, or indeed, the country in general. Change was in the fucking wind!
The next time I went to school it was very different. I started 7th Grade (or Standard 5 in South Africa at the time) and I was suddenly exposed to, gasp, black kids in school with me. It was such a novelty, and so interesting and different. I had never seen black children in uniform, let alone at reputable schools. I had grown up with black friends my age on the farm in Thornville, Kwazulu-Natal, but we had come from such different backgrounds. This was a new beast, and I loved it! Here was my stuffy English government school in Pietermaritzburg that was suddenly accepting kids of all races. Black, Indian, Chinese… Everyone! Fucking weird man…
Just a year below me was a kid I loved. He was black and angry and didn’t give a fuck about the rules. He was defiant and refused to tow any lines. I loved him. His name was Anton Luthuli. He was Albert Luthuli’s grandson, I believe. Look that shit up. All I know is, I fucking loved his anarchist outlook. He was a badass. I’m sure he still is.
Anyway, that was a little history. I’m sorry I rambled. Here’s the fucking point…
Nelson Mandela changed my life, and changed the country I call home. He was an amazing man that achieved more than I could ever hope to. We, as South Africans, can never even begin to explain how much we loved this man. He was our father. Our grandfather. Our motherfucking «Madiba». He was the reason any of us had hope to believe that we could break barriers and become more than life had restricted us to, based on socio-political standing. He made us all believe that we could be anything we believed in our hearts we were meant to be. He was a symbol of strength and unity, and he was the best fucking South African to ever live. I hope that I can be a tenth of the man he was. God, I’d settle for a hundredth.
Rest in peace, Madiba. Thank you for the way you changed my life. Thank you for the lessons I learned from you. Thank you. Thank you. There is a void in this world that will never be filled.
Hopefully he gets as much of a kick out of all the poser assholes who wrote their obligatory tweets of remorse for his passing as I did. There is nothing in this world that offends me more than fake fucking condolences. I only know how to say this in Zulu to show respect for a Xhosa man… Hamba kahle, Madiba. Ngiyabonga. La banda ha elegido nueva bajista. La elegida es una argentina llamada Paz Lenchantin, y será quien acompañará a la banda en su nueva gira, después de la salida de la bajista mítica de la banda, Kim Shattuck. Nacionalizada en Estados Unidos desde hace varios años, Lenchantin, con 39 años se hizo conocida por su participación en bandas como A Perfect Circle o el proyecto en solitario de Billy Corgan, Zwan. En una entrevista se pudo leer que:
«Estamos con muchas ganas de tocar con ella en estas fechas. Trabajar con diferentes bajistas es nuevo para la banda, pero lo estamos pasando muy bien haciéndolo».
Pixies realizará 33 fechas en Estados Unidos, además de su gira por Europa e incluyendo un tour por Latinoamérica.
The band has chosen A new bassist. The choice is called Paz Lenchantin, a girl from Argentina, and she will accompany the band on their new tour, after the departure of the legendary bassist, Kim Shattuck. Nationalized in the United States, Lenchantin, 39, became known for his involvement in bands like A Perfect Circle or the solo project of Billy Corgan, Zwan. In an interview we can rea:
«We want play with her. Working with different bassists we are new thing to the band, but we’re having a great time doing it.»

DG: Oh, Dios. ¿Puedo darte pistas? Déjame pensar en algunas buenas pistas. No se trata de llegar al estudio y grabar el disco. Ésa es una. Hay un tema más grande alrededor del disco que cualquier otro álbum de los Foo Fighters. No es un musical ni es una ópera, pero hay un motivo por el cual lo estamos haciendo de esta manera y nadie lo ha hecho antes, esta es la primera vez. Estoy muy emocionado porque a todos los que les he contado me han dicho “esa sí que es una idea chingona, no puedo esperar a escucharlo”. Creativamente, es mucho más que grabar un disco. Es un proyecto más grande y es genial. Yo he estado trabajando en esto por seis meses. Es algo grande y va a suceder el año que viene y va a estar en todo el mundo.
No puedo esperar más. La música es increíble, para mí es de un disco clásico. Y una de las cosas que nos gusta sobre todo lo demás es tocar en vivo, creo que ese es nuestro punto más fuerte. Cuando lleguemos al estadio a tocar, nosotros no tocamos nada más por hora y media, ni tocamos por dos horas, a veces tocamos por tres y te sabes casi todas las canciones que tocamos, y yo estoy corriendo tan rápido como puedo de un lado del escenario a otro durante todo el pinche show, animando a la audiencia para que se una a las canciones. Cada noche de mi vida lo único que quiero hacer es recrear a Queen en Live Aid 1985. Para mí eso es un concierto de rock. Ahí está nuestra fuerza. Y si tienes canciones que son divertidas en el estudio, entonces van a ser divertidas en vivo. Estoy emocionado.
-You talk a lot about this new album, you say that is mysterious, unconventional . We need some clues.
DG : Oh , God. Can I give you clues? Let me think of some good leads. It won’t be just going into a studio and making a record. There’s a bigger theme to the record than any other Foo Fighters record. Not a musical, and it’s not an opera, but there’s a reason why we’re making it this way. No ones ever done it.. I’m very excited because all I’ve told them I’ve been told » this really is a fucking great idea can not wait to hear it.» Creatively , it’s much more than a record. It’s a bigger project and it’s great. I’ve been working on this for six months. It’s big and it’s going to happen next year and will be worldwide .
I can’t wait. The music is amazing to me, is a classic album. And one of the things we love about everything else is playing live , I think that is our strongest point . When we get to the stadium to play, we don’t play around an hour and a half , we played for two hours, sometimes played for three and I know almost all the songs we play, and I’m running as fast as I can from one side of stage to another throughout the fucking show , encouraging the audience to join the songs. Every night of my life all I want to do is recreate Queen at Live Aid 1985 . To me that’s a rock concert . That is our strength. And if you have songs that are fun in the studio , then they will be fun live . I’m excited .
