Q&A Mark Lanegan – on working with Duke Garwood & QotSA, his new ‘crooner’ album & more

¿Cuál fue el atractivo de hacer un disco con Duke Garwood?

«Soy un gran fan de sus discos y de todo lo que hace, por lo que en algún momento pensé: Hey tío, quizás pueda cantar eso con él, y él pensó lo mismo. Simplemente todo salió. Soy un gran admirador. Su siguiente disco, que acaba de terminar ahora, ¡va a ser alucinante! »

Cuando le sugeriste hacer el disco juntos, ¿tenías las cosas claras sobre cómo dividir las cosas? La gente puede asumir que harías las letras, la música, o las directrices estaban más borrosas?

«Esa es la forma en que funcionaba. Asumí la misma cosa! [Risas] Me envió un montón de material. El podría escribir algo en el clarinete, o podría escribir algo con un piano, o podría escribir algo en una guitarra  … todo esto es muy avant-garde en comparación con lo que hago normalmente. Así que tenía un montón de cosas y estaba averiguando cómo hacer para cantar sobre todo ello. Algunas, pese a que me encantasen , no pude encontrar una manera de cantar sobre ellas, pero había tanto matarial para elegir que al final pudimos hacer que el disco funcionase. Es más, no  usamos todo lo que teníamos. Él es muy prolífico, se produjo mucho para elegir. »

¿Queda algo que hayas estando anhelando hacer?

Quería hacer un disco al estilo Crooner, a falta de un término mejor. Ya sabes, orquestada, cosas como Andy Williams o Perry Como . Terminé la grabación de un disco así en febrero, así que lo sacaré en otoño. Esto era algo que quería hacer desde hace años y años. estoy seguro de que hay un montón de otras cosas, también. »

¿Mark Lanegan cantando The American Songbook?
[risas] «En realidad no, hago una canción de John Cale, una canción de Nick Cave, pero en ese estilo. Se llama imitación»

What was the attraction of making a record with Duke Garwood?
«I’m a really big fan of his records and what he does, so at some point I thought, Hey man maybe I can sing-a-long with that, and he though so too. It worked out. I’m a big fan. His next record, which is just getting finished now, is going to be mind blowing!»

When you suggested doing the album together, were you clear on how you’d divide things up? People might assume you’d do the words, he’d do the music, or were the lines more blurred?
«That is how it worked out. I assumed the same thing! [laughs] He sent me a ton of stuff. He might write something on clarinet, or he might write something on an out of tune piano, or he might write something on a one string guitar… he’s fairly avant-garde compared with what I normally do. So I got a ton of stuff and it was just figuring out a way to sing over some of it. Some of it, even though I loved it, I couldn’t find a way to make it a song with singing on it, but there was so much stuff that we found a record’s worth. And more. It’s not like we used everything we had. He’s very prolific, there was a lot to choose from.»

Is there anything left you’ve been yearning to do?
«I wanted to make a record with a crooner-ish type of song, for want of a better term. You know, orchestrated, stuff like Andy Williams or Perry Como would do. I ended-up recording a record like that in February, it’s going to be out in the fall. That was something I wanted to do for years and years. I’m sure there’s a lot of other stuff, too.»

Mark Lanegan Sings The American Songbook?
[laughs] «Not really, I do a John Cale song, a Nick Cave song but in that style. It’s called Imitations.»
